A prominent taiko player

Born in 1947 in the city of Iida (Shinshu district of today’s Nagano prefecture), which is located in a beautiful part in the south of “The Japanese Alps” (an unofficial name of the Akaishi Ridge). Ebato Michiko-san was excited by taiko playing when she became as old as forty, and it was largely favored by her acquaintances with Tadayoshi Kono and Renzan Ryu, leaders of the famous ensembles “Byo-uchi-daiko” and “Oushu Sabane” respectively.

Mrs. Michiko Ebato has still been taking lessons with them until now, although her own ensemble, “Ohtsuka Daiko Kazurakai,” which she founded together with her daughter, Oshidare Rie, in September 1995, is becoming more and more popular. About thirty musicians of most various ages participate in the group, giving over 25 recitals per year during holidays and at various festivals. It is already twice that the group has been hosted by a festival “The Heart of Japan” of Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, as well as been on tours in Thailand and South Korea.

In 2005, Mrs. Ebato-sensei opened a taiko playing class at the Moscow Conservatory together with her daughter, sensei Oshidare Rie, and they both have been teaching there so far. Capture: Mrs. Ebato-sensei at the Twelfth Festival “The Heart of Japan,” 1 May 2010.
