A Chinese musician and Chinese classical music researcher. A prominent guqin and pipa player.
Professor of the Tianjin Conservatory of Music. Member of the Association of Chinese Musicians. Chairwoman of Tianjin Guqinhui (the Guqin Players’ Association of Tianjin).
In 1977, Li Fengyun entered the Secondary School of the Tianjin Conservatory of Music; and in 1981, she was accepted there to learn from Professors Liu Gang and Dong Jiuru how to play pipa. In 1983, she began to study the qin playing with Prof. Chen Zhong. Upon her graduation in 1985, Li Fengyun joined the staff of the Tianjin Conservatory of Music and then continued to improve her qin playing with Li Xiangting at the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music until 1988.
In 1986, Li Fengyun played a tune called “A Dialog Between A Fisherman and A Woodcutter” at a concert called “Master Chen Zhong and Students” in Beijing. Her performance was highly appreciated by Wu Jingliu, a famous qin virtuoso. In 1988, Li Fengyun became an honored and, simultaneously, the last pupil of Zhang Ziqian (1899–1991), a prominent qin player of the Guangling school.
In 1994, Li Fengyun was on a training program at the Institute for Qin Music Researches, where she studied the qin playing theory and the ancient qin music notation with Xiu Jian. Li Fengyun has currently been teaching at the Tianjin Conservatory of Music and chairing the Guqin Players’ Association of Tianjin.
She won an award at the Open Qin Playing Competition in Hangzhou (1992), then played recitals in Japan and Singapore (1993) and participated in an International Symposium “The Qin Music” in Beijing (1994).
In 1995, Li Fengyun was invited by the Municipal Orchestra of Taibei to recite a concert program at the Art Festival in Taibei, as well as participated twice in international symposia on the ancient qin music in Chengdu (1990 & 1995). Li Fengyun has given recitals in Belarus, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Singapore and the USA.
She is an author of some publications on the practice and history of guqin playing. Li Fengyun has been teaching a Chinese music class (guqin) at the Center “World Music Cultures” of Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory. She has been a permanent participant of the scientific and creative program “The Universe of Sound.”
